Janice's name
May 15, 2023
Okay. So you know how the wiki says that Janice was called Jaydee in the pilot episode? I overthought about that and now I have a new headcanon:
Janice's mother was also named Janice, and she named Janice after herself before she gave birth to her. But when she died, her father couldn't call Janice "Janice" without being reminded of his wife and getting upset, so he started calling her "JD" (her initials), or "Jaydee".
Melrose picked up on this and goes as far as to tell Janice that she doesn't deserve to be named after their mother, and other mean things like that.
Janice didn't like being called Jaydee because it reminds her of how her father and Melrose feel about her. That she makes them upset just by having been born (and "killing" her mother in the process).
But now that she lives in Candle Cove, everyone calls her Janice.
Janice's middle name is Darla or something.
"Some" Tarantula Crew Headcanons
Apr 26, 2023
GENERAL
ROOM-SHARING SETUP
- Lillian, Mary, Talapio, and later Auburn
- Boar, Dr. Mort (although he spends most nights working in his office), and later Thade
- Schot and Percy
- Conea sleeps in the water
HEIGHTS
- BOAR IS HUGE. The wiki says that if he was a puppet in the show, he would have been almost as tall as Janice, which would make him, like, twice as tall as the other puppet characters?? So I headcanon him to be like, over 7 feet tall. A literal giant. Why not?
- Everyone else on the crew is also fairly tall. Thade is quite tall (but by a normal amount, not tall like Boar), and Lillian and Schot are a few inches shorter than him.
- Red Mary isn't short by typical standards (she's like... 5'4" I guess?) but seems short compared to the rest of the crew.
- Dr. Mort is SMALL. He's shorter than Mary and just barely taller than Percy (but he's catching up to him!)
- Percy is at a normal 12-year-old boy height. Auburn is a little shorter.
- Conea is also probably 7 feet tall, but that's average for a merman.
- Disclaimer: I'm bad at visualizing height, so if this is confusing... that's why
LILLIAN
- Strong sense of justice and what's right.
- Has a code about paying back debts. Like, the only reason she let Mary join the crew was because she (supposedly) saved them once. This is also why she lets Dr. Mort stay even though people have tried to get him fired (he's saved their lives multiple times and she thinks it would be wrong).
- Her reason for becoming a pirate was pretty silly and not thought through (teenage/young adult rebellion), but it worked out for her.
- I imagine her to be very tan and have lots of freckles.
- Feral.
- Follows her gut rather than common sense sometimes.
THADE
- Talks a lot. Constantly asks questions. Annoys people.
- He’s normally quiet and shy but talkative towards people he knows well.
- Manic pixie dream boy! He and Lillian are manic pixie dream people to each other.
- Is Percy’s cool older brother/cool young uncle figure
- He's the scout of the crew.
- (There are other parallels between him and Percy as well)
- Was a tailor (or tanner? I'm not sure) before he joined the crew.
RED MARY
- She's the first mate.
- She hides the full extent of her powers from the crew.
- Her normal-power-level magic causes her to generate fire in the air (like that Dragon Ball fireball thing), but her super powerful magic actually causes fire to come out of her skin.
- (CW for really severe burns) Her hands and arms are badly burned because of it, and she's missing fingernails and some parts of her fingers.
- And in the future (like when the show of Candle Cove takes place), her hands and forearms (plus some other parts of her body) are just bones. Like she burned all her flesh off. (CW over)
- Either she is able to ignore pain, or she got Mort to do brain surgery on her so she no longer felt pain.
- She’s both smart and calculating but also prone to following her impulses.
- She doesn't have any complicated motivation for being evil, I don't think. She just likes to burn and kill and destroy for fun. Like a child burning ants with a magnifying glass.
- My voice headcanon for her is Amanda Palmer.
PERCY
- Lillian assigned him the duty of teaching Thade about how Candle Cove works (because everyone else are adults and have things to get done) and they’re close because of it.
- Reckless. Needs to be supervised. Causes Schot so much anxiety.
- Stands up for himself. Would get into arguments with grown adults.
- Kind of a little shit, honestly–
- Loves and relies on the crew more than he’d like to admit.
BOAR
- Sometimes frightens people due to his absurd height but is very soft and kind.
- His relationship to Lillian is that they were friends (like found-family siblings, basically), and he took care of her after her parents disowned her.
- If you meet him, he's your friend. You don't have a choice.
- There's a running gag of him acting more fatherly towards Percy than Schot. Like, Schot would swear, and Boar would gasp and cover Percy's ears. Things like that.
- The story of how he got his nickname is embarrassing and he gets flustered if people bring it up.
- Used to be a whaler before he became a pirate.
SCHOT
- Everyone else is sort of suspicious of Red Mary, but Schot is the only one who seriously distrusts her. He's spoken to Lillian about it, but she thinks that it's just his hypervigilance/past trauma causing him to see proof that isn't there.
- He was imprisoned by the NPHC once but (barely) escaped. The scars over his eyes are from the Earl of Wax and his Freddy Krueger torture glove.
- He's blind in one eye (caused by Earl torturing him).
- Doesn't really enjoy being a pirate. He's sick of all the violence and danger and just wants to settle down and live safely with Percy.
- The only reason he's with the crew is because the navy is after him and he knows he can't live anywhere in Candle Cove without them eventually finding him again.
- His dolphin necklace used to belong to his wife.
CONEA
- I feel bad for him because he stays in the water and can't come on deck and interact with the crew.
- He probably doesn't mind though. He seems like a loner/introvert.
- Used to be part of the Amantis military and developed explosives for war. He regrets this.
- Was outcast from Amantis for rebelling against the government and whatever wars they were fighting.
- Secretive about his past
- I am compelled by the idea of him having, like, mechanical legs? And being able to walk around the ship and interact with people, but I don't know. I think him staying in the water the whole time could be compelling too if it's done well.
DR. MORT
- Acts aloof, like he's just an employee of the crew and not actually part of the crew/"family".
- Very… lowkey. People barely notice when he is or isn't around. Hides out in his office all the time unless there's a crew meeting or something.
- Once the crew visited Banana Land to get fruits, and then they left, and then like 3 hours later, they realized Mort was gone and that they had left him there--
- Soft voice. Pleasant smile. Actually has a sort of comforting presence if he's not operating on you.
- He weighs about… 10 pounds? (he is just a large ragdoll) and has been blown/thrown off the deck of the ship more than once.
- Do you know how stuffed animals that have been around for generations get skrunkly and pilly and sort of gross? That's kind of how he looks. (Look up "Too Much Love photo series" for examples of what I mean.)
- Everyone there sort of dislikes (or is scared of) him, but he isn't bothered by it.
TALAPIO
- She didn't have human-level intelligence until she got light magic. She was just a normal (but large) spider.
- She was previously kept as a pet by a powerful light magician who gifted her their powers on their deathbed.
- Her powers: being supernaturally smart, mind-reading, predicting the future, knowing things that are otherwise impossible to know, glowing.
- Her role in the crew is a seer. Like, she finds hidden treasure and stuff like that.
- The crew calls her Tilly for short.
- She CAN communicate with people somehow even though she can’t talk. She writes or uses Morse code or something.
- She either "left" when Mary joined the crew, like the wiki says (Mary knew that Talapio knew her true intentions and killed her before she could tell anyone), or Mary just threatened to kill her if she told anyone in order to keep her quiet.
AUBURN
- Oh, you thought PERCY was a little shit?!!
- I like the idea in the fandom of her being adopted. Like, Lillian just found her someplace. (I don't think Lillian would have a whole baby in such a dangerous environment.)
- What if... she was a runaway?
- Around 10 years old.
- Lillian, Thade, Boar, and Schot are all her parents.
- Took on personality traits from all the crew members.
- She and Percy disliked each other at first but eventually became close siblings.
- There are parallels between her and Janice. Like, with her being separated by her family and then being raised by a pirate crew. Janice reminds Percy of her in ways.
- Has a strong sense of justice that Lillian taught her.
- I'm on the fence if I want her to be the same character as Flaming Dragon from the Hogs Crew. Like, I think it would be compelling if she learns she has fire magic after having been traumatized by fire before. But I also like Flaming Dragon and want her to be her own character with no backstory I have to take into consideration.
Tomboyish Sariah headcanons ft. Milo being a loser
Apr 16, 2023
I headcanon Sariah to have been a repressed tomboy. And, like, she always craved adventure and wanted to break free from the pressures of high society. So she was excited when she left her family to live with Milo on his ship because she was finally free to be herself.
And Milo was a douche and only liked Sariah when she was all docile and helpless and “cute” and was conflicted when she started acting less feminine.
But the rest of the crew was supportive of her. Mainly because they saw her acting all docile and naive when she first arrived and were like, "Alright, she's not gonna survive out here like this." So they helped tomboyify her (taught her how to fight, cut her hair, stuff like that) even though Milo didn’t like it.
So yeah, she became "one of the boys," and eventually became good friends with the boys, and Milo was unreasonably pissy about it. They drifted apart because of it. Maybe they broke up? Or they just had a rough patch, idk.
Also, you know how the wiki says that the Jolly Hounds were attacked by the NPHC, and that's the reason Milo joined the Laughingstocks? I headcanon that he lied about this, and he was actually kicked/voted off the crew because they were finally fed up with him.
And even though they kicked him off, they kept SariAH HAGHHH HAHSHAHAHAHSHAHH–
Idk, I think it's funny. Like, for Milo to get cuckolded, in a way, because all his dude friends loved and cared about Sariah (as a friend, mind you!!) better than he did, and then kicked him out of his own crew and his own relationship with her–
Anagram thing
Apr 6, 2023
You know, since Thade Soben's name is an anagram of "Death Bones", it makes me wonder if all Abyssians' names are anagrams.
Anyway, I headcanon Red Mary's full name to be Mary Copina now.
First person to solve it gets a priiiiize~ /j
The Jolly Hounds!
Mar 6, 2023
MILO
Name: Milo Davies
Age: 26
Position: Captain
Bio: Milo is Poppy's younger brother and was part of the Laughingstock Crew in its early days. He left to form his own crew when he was a teenager, feeling stifled by Poppy.
Milo is vain and reckless, and he relies on his crewmates more than he'd like to admit. He acts tyrannical, but the crew doesn't take him seriously enough to feel threatened by it.
BLACK CHIN
Name: Evelyn "Black Chin" Black
Age: 30
Position: First mate
Bio: Milo, Black Chin, and Henric used to be buddies. They'd meet up at the pub and talk and fantasize together about forming their own crew. When Milo left the Laughingstock Crew, the three of them formed the Jolly Hounds Crew. (Henric eventually left for reasons I won't get into here.)
Black Chin is the only crew member Milo truly respects. He's more mature and levelheaded (and sober) than Milo and often acts as his voice of reason. He knows that he'd be a better captain than Milo is, but he's content with being first mate.
He HATES his first name. It reminds him of his posh upbringing. Mentioning it would get you a dirty look or a knock from his sword hilt.
KIMOTHY
Name: Kimothy Smith
Age: 33
Position: Gunner and striker
Bio: When he was a small child, Kimothy's parents shipwrecked off the Previously-Abandoned-Now-Inhabited Island and drowned. Kimothy survived and was raised by the PANI Islanders, who taught him his battle skills. The Jolly Hounds visited the PANI Island once, and Kimothy chose to join them, wanting to explore the world.
Kimothy is a jack-of-all-trades with weapons and carries three or four at a time. He's a violent but honorable fighter.
He speaks with a severe mumble and most people can't understand him unless he speaks in short sentences. Roger can understand him just fine, however, and usually acts as his interpreter.
ROGER
Name: Roger Rogerson III
Age: 43
Position: Scout
Bio: Roger once attempted to start a career as a detective. Unfortunately for him, there isn't much demand for detectives in Candle Cove. He resorted to joining the crew because he couldn't make a living and they needed somebody who was actually smart a scout.
He is a skilled (if tragically unappreciated) investigator and uses his skills to do things like find hidden treasure and obtain information from enemy crews.
He has a scope in his left eye socket. It has several moveable lenses (like those things optometrists use) and can function as a magnifying glass or telescope or microscope as need be. He designed and built it himself and had it surgically implanted by Dr. Mort.
STARSON
Name: Starson von Gnock
Age: 22
Position: Navigator
Bio: Starson was born into an aristocratic family that micromanaged his life, controlling everything he did in order to maintain their power in high society and keep up appearances. Knowing how rich his family is, the Jolly Hounds once kidnapped him and held him for ransom. It turned out that he was thrilled to finally be free from his parents, and to have some excitement in his life, and he chose to join the crew instead of return home.
He has a talent for navigation and map-making. He considers his time with the crew as temporary, eventually wanting to begin a career as a cartographer using the knowledge of Candle Cove's topography he's gained while sailing with the crew. He's just waiting for the tension with his family to die down.
BUBBA
Name: Barrabas "Bubba" True
Age: 41
Position: Cook and janitor
Bio: A bored sailor, Bubba accidentally stumbled onto the Jolly Hounds' ship one day, said, "Eh, why not?" and joined them. The crew was happy with this because nobody else knew how to cook or clean.
Bubba is a goofy and easygoing guy. He often seems drunk, but he doesn't drink; that's just how he is.
SARIAH
Name: Sariah Fanshawe
Age: 24
Position: Cabin girl
Bio: Sariah is an upper-class woman who's always been fascinated by the adventurous life of pirates. This is one of the reasons she was attracted to and started dating Milo. One day, she had a falling out with her family, and ran away to live on the ship with Milo and the crew.
Sariah was quite naive when she first joined, and the other crew members thought that she didn't have to guts to be a pirate. This wasn't helped by the fact that Milo coddles her. However, she's learning the ropes.
DANNY
Name: Danny
Age: 4
Position: Ship pet
Bio: The crew found Danny's egg abandoned one day while looking for treasure and decided to care for it until it hatched. Milo disagreed with this, but he was outvoted by everyone else. He eventually warmed up to him and considers him to be his pet.
Danny is a wyvern (he has 2 wings and 2 legs) and only about as big as a macaw. He can't breathe fire, much to Milo's dismay.
Dr. Mort my beloved
Feb 10, 2023
CW: medical stuff, dismemberment (of dolls), blood
Keep reading
Full name: Mortimer Doulaire (Doulaire sounds like “douleur,” which means “pain” in French)
From a race of doll-people. I’ll make a separate post about them later, but basically, they’re made of stuffing and cloth. They don’t feel pain and are relatively hard to kill, compared to humans.
Weighs like 20 pounds since he is just a human-sized doll (easy to fling around).
Old. He was like 100 when he died (doll-people can't die from old age). He was able to study and practice medicine for a really long time, making him more skilled than any human doctor could be.
French accent (but I don't know if the T in his name is silent or not).
Chose to study human medicine because he’s fascinated by human biology. But in a weird way. He wanted a job that allowed him to dissect people for fun without it being illegal.
He mentored Dr. Heartfelt, and he helped shape his beliefs by being the kind of doctor Heartfelt absolutely DID NOT want to become.
Well-known for his terrible bedside manner. He’s unsympathetic, un-reassuring, non-communicative, and borderline dehumanizing.
People (sort of) tolerate him despite this because he’s a doll-person and he doesn’t fully understand things like pain or what it’s like to be sick. (There’s some truth in this, but he’s smart enough to know better.)
Also because they sometimes don’t have a choice. There’s a shortage of doctors in Candle Cove.
Doesn't care about medical ethics. As long as something sounds exciting and relatively safe, he'll do it. Experimentation is the foundation of science!
He’s known for this. If people want strange and illegal procedures done and are accepting of the risks, they see him.
Seems careless and risky, but he does take the safety of his patients seriously. If a patient dies, that means he’s failed, and he’s too prideful for that.
After he finished medical school, he moved to Candle Cove and opened a clinic.
Because of his extensive experience, he was regarded as the best doctor in the region. Sometimes the other doctors had to refer their patients to him, and they hated it (i.e. needing to condemn their patients to him and his inhumane treatment whenever they had problems too complex for them to fix themselves).
Inevitably got into legal trouble for malpractice. He joined the Tarantula Crew to evade law enforcement.
The rest of the crew didn't know this. I mean, they suspected it, but never asked about it.
Red Mary killed him first, dismembered him, and used his remains (stuffing) as kindling when she burned down the ship.
He’s affable and even kind outside his work. He asks people to call him by his first name. People who’ve never had to see him think he’s a good man.
He’s also fairly polite to his patients, but in a superficial way. Like, he says please and thank you, but it’s like, “PLEASE don’t scream so loudly while I saw off your leg without anesthesia.”
Somewhat prideful. He works for the satisfaction of it and thinks he can do anything (but is he wrong?).
Fears death. He was groveling and everything during the attack (to Mary’s amusement).
His hands and forearms are stained with blood (this is subtle enough to look like it’s just his natural skin color).
Uses his left shoulder as a pincushion for sewing needles. (Dr. Heartfelt does this, too.) (I headcanon him to be a doll-person as well, btw)
Skin-Taker has his button eyes sewn onto his cape somewhere.
Or, alternatively, Red Mary made earrings out of them.
Some Candle Cove headcanons:
Feb 3, 2023
--Skin Taker speaks with more of a posh British accent compared to everyone else. He never developed a pirate accent.
--The Laughingstock Crew was named "The Laughingstock Crew" as an insult by other pirates. This is because the early Laughingstock crew was made up of just Poppy, Percy (the coward), Milo (a little boy), Dr. Heartfelt, possibly Sea Dog, and their goofy talking ship.
--Kimothy and Sunny are good friends. They meet up at the pub, sit next to each other, get drinks, but barely talk.
--Dr. Mort is a member of a race/species that is incapable of feeling pain. He also doesn't understand what pain feels like and thinks people (like his patients) overreact about it. He doesn't waste time and money on anesthesia for this reason.
